Introducing “Pac-Man AR”
Imagine opening TikTok or Instagram and finding an AR effect that lets you play a game inspired by the classic Pac-Man. But here’s the twist – instead of controlling Pac-Man with a joystick, you use your own face! Your face becomes the character, and you control it by tilting your head up, down, left, and right to navigate the maze. Welcome to Pac-Man AR!
The Idea Behind the Project
The idea for “Pac-Man AR” came from my love for retro games. Pac-Man is a timeless classic that everyone knows and loves. I wanted to create an AR experience that brings this nostalgic game to life in a new, interactive way, using the capabilities of modern AR technology on social media platforms.
Building with Effect House and Meta Spark
Effect House (TikTok) and Meta Spark (Instagram) are powerful tools for creating AR effects. For “Pac-Man AR,” I utilized both platforms to reach a wider audience and to take advantage of their unique features.

How It Works
Here’s a glimpse into the development process:
- Conceptualization and Design: The first step was reimagining Pac-Man with a twist – replacing the character with the user’s face. I designed a simple but recognizable maze, similar to the original game.
- Development in Effect House and Meta Spark: Using these platforms, I implemented the AR components, focusing on face tracking and head movement detection. The advanced tracking capabilities of both tools allowed me to accurately map head movements to the character’s movements in the game.
- Gameplay Mechanics: I programmed the game mechanics so that when the user tilts their head, their face (as the character) moves accordingly. The goal is to navigate the maze, collect points, and avoid ghosts, just like in the original Pac-Man.
User Experience
When you activate the “Pac-Man AR” effect on TikTok or Instagram, the AR experience begins by detecting your face. Your face then appears as the Pac-Man character in the game. You control the character by tilting your head up, down, left, and right. The objective is to navigate the maze, collect points, and avoid the ghosts, all while having fun seeing your own face as the main character.
